The best way to change the future of a community is to educate its women and girls. Research shows that each semester of education a woman completes beyond high school raises her family’s economic status. Breaking the cycle of poverty is what inspires The Care Center’s emphasis on getting our students successfully into college.

The Care Center is a nonprofit organization providing resources and support to empower youth and their families to continue their educations, increase self-confidence, develop leadership skills, and make healthy life choices leading toward self-sufficiency.

By modeling our program after those of well-respected prep schools, we have achieved extraordinary results. We layer arts, humanities and athletics on top of basic GED education. Add to that high expectations and an equally high level of support, and our students’ passion for learning is re-ignited. Persistent, convincing messages about the importance of higher education – for our students as well as their children – encourage them to look toward a much brighter future and helps equip them to achieve it. Today, nearly 80 percent of Care Center graduates go on to college.

  • I Write

    by Wanda Cappas

    I write about my daughter
how she puts a smile on
    my face each morning.
    I write about anger.
I write about how hard it
is to be a young mother
    and how people criticize me.
    I write about my sister
    how I missed her when
    she was away.
    I write about anything
    that crosses my mind.
    I write about my
    name, Muñeca, crazy,
    untouchable, trouble,
    Wanda.
    I write about
    me.
